Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

BFT motors and control boards are dependable. The metal around them is what gives out first, especially in Southern California where sun exposure and the occasional Santa Ana wind load work on welds year after year. Here’s what Fullerton owners notice before they call us:

• The gate leans toward the latch post when closed. This is almost always a hinge weld that’s cracked or stretched at the top hinge, where the full weight of the gate pulls hardest. Left alone, it will eventually snap the lower hinge too.
• A creaking or popping sound with every open/close cycle. That’s metal rubbing on metal at a failed weld. Grease quiets it for a week, but the crack keeps working wider underneath.
• The gate scrapes the driveway about halfway through its travel. A bent post bracket or settled mounting plate changes the gate’s swing geometry. The motor doesn’t know the difference and keeps pushing, which accelerates the damage.
• The actuator arm has visible play at the connection point. BFT arms are mounted with clevis pins and brackets. When the hole elongates from wear, the gate jerks instead of moving smoothly, and that jerking beats up the gearbox.
• The gate travels past its normal limit and slams into the stop. If the rack or chain mount has shifted due to a broken weld, the limit switch no longer corresponds to the actual gate position. That’s a setup problem caused by a structural failure.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things: look for visible cracks in the hinge plates, see if the post is plumb with a level, and note whether the gate moves freely by hand with the motor disengaged. That last step means pulling the release handle, which is safe to do on BFT operators and helps us diagnose by phone.

What you should not do is attempt to weld a cracked hinge or bracket yourself. Gate frames and posts are under constant tension from the gate’s own weight. A bad weld can fail without warning and drop a several-hundred-pound gate on whoever is standing near it. This is one repair where the risk is not worth the savings, and a proper fix includes grinding out the old weld, not just laying new material over the crack.
